At Farsley Farfield Primary School, the children are given opportunity to listen to a particular genre every half term. During the Sping 1 term of the 2014/2015 academic year, the genre was Jazz.

Jazz music began in the 1890s, over 100 years ago, in southern United States. The genre is known for its syncopation and swing rhythms, often accompanying dance. Initially played on the piano, Jazz developed to include trumpets, trombones, saxophones, bass and drums. The first pieces of music were written for instruments only. Vocal melodies and lyrics began to appear during the 1920s and ’30s. Even though the genre has been around for a long time, it remains very popular to this day!
